Guess Toris got more than just that one memory back?
Also! I’ll be the artist on the next Avatar: The Last Airbender comic series (working with the amazing Faith Erin Hicks)! More details are at the link, along with some character designs I’ve done so far. Avatar was a huge influence on my art and storytelling, and I’m thrilled to be able to add a little to it. There’s not too much more to say for now, but I’ll keep you updated.
As far as Stonebreaker is concerned — don’t worry! I plan to see this thing through. Updates will continue as normal. See you Thursday with another page!
(And seriously, follow Faith on twitter if you haven’t already, and pick up her Nameless City books. They’re great, and if you like Avatar (or Stonebreaker, for that matter) they’re exactly your kind of thing.)
Great news! Congratulations!! You deserve it!
woot! congrats! that’s awesome!
i hope they cover you with money!!
=)
Congrats! That sounds like an amazing project. I finally finished watching the TV series a few months ago. (Hard to believe I put that off so long)
I’m also excited to see how this comic develops. So far I’m guessing:
1. Toris didn’t die of old age (his friend didn’t appear that old in the scene dealing with Toris the demon.)
2. Something else must have killed or put Toris in a near death situation. Whether it be accident, illness, or punishment we don’t know.
3. It sounds like any demon could have obtained Toris’s memories as soon as he got dropped down the well with said focus stone.
4. This demon took the “bait.” We aren’t sure of motives, whether it be hunger, curiosity or to keep worse demons from taking Toris’ memories.
5. In the process Toris the demon appears to have lost his own memories. He seems to be possessed by Human Toris’ memories, and/or soul.
Likely story, but there is an interesting additional detail: the memories of the original TORIS were stolen like his name by CANATOPIS/MOGIS/HALIN/… in page “human” also in page “seeing-things” FERADIN tells the current TORIS “I guess that human didn’t give you *everything* back”. So the story is more mysterious still. I wonder whether the original name of Anyalin’s brother was “Toris”, and which demon stole his name and memories.
I’m not convinced CANATOPIS and inc: stole Toris’s memories. The demon started to, but I suspect when Anya touched him and shouted out his name that halted the process. (the area where she touches turns from gel back into solid form)
Re: Anya’s brother, Perhaps it was CANATOPIS (in MOTGIS’s form)

«Toris didn’t die of old age (his friend didn’t appear that old»
Koris seemed to me to behave more like a guy who has a crush on Toris than a friend in pages “toris-4” and “fun”.
Still it was Koris who was against running the risk and keeping the memories in page “memories-2”.

Fantastic news for FE Hicks, and for comic readers.
Ah interesting, so the semicircular stone around the head of the old soldier in page “the-well” was a focus stone. But that old soldier looked pretty dead, not about to die.
In the next page “demon” the evoked CANATOPIS seems quite shocked, maybe because of the memory transference.
BTW there is an apparent incongruity:
* In page “scroll” TORIS remembers reading the special scroll that was read by Toris and Koris in page “stories”.
* Yet Koris is angry at TORIS for having the same name as Toris in the subsequent page “command-2”, and for handling the scroll that is for him a memory of Toris.
* Koris then in page “old-friend” calls TORIS “old friend”, as he used to call Toris, just before jumping into the well, which seems to imply that he had recognized that TORIS had the memories of Toris (and obviously his nice, bookish, librarian personality too).
* But in this page it is implied that Koris agreed, after refusing in page “memories-2”, to retrieve the memories of Toris with a well-of-memories ceremony.
Point *2. I got the impression Koris didn’t want Toris’ memories to be transferred into a demon, thus when he found demon Toris that made him angry and upset.
*3 I suspect he loved/ valued Toris as a friend and came to accept the demon form as his friend. No surprise he’d call demon Toris “Old friend” as well as being sad leaving him to jump into the well.
*4 I doubt Koris agreed to the decision. The anger he has finding the demon Toris implies he is shocked/ angry/ upset to see Toris in that form. The anger directed at Toris, I doubt is at the demon, but directed towards those who made it happen.

I can’t think of any artist who would be more suited than you for working with Faith Erin Hicks on Avatar! Congratulations!
