Also on a completely different topic, I have just realized what may be the function of the head-shaped totems in the picture at the bottom of each page, and here:
Exactly what I’ve been thinking. I get the feeling that the leaders of the town “exile” people by sending them down the very same hole they are in, just like this page: http://stonebreakercomic.com/stonebreaker/the-well/
They come back as a demon which they can enslave….at some point the demons realize they can also take names, thus turn against the humans and then end up here with this war.

I suspect the gang got caught by the town leaders during this supposed “play” and sentenced to “exile” Sent down the well and turned. I suspect Toris was triggered when he either saw the skeleton of his old self or one of his former closest friends.
Walex: If wqe want to go more with the totem theory I suspect that totem in particular belongs to either Koris or Toris. It would likely be either one of them for it to be found along with that very same scroll and trigger Toris’s human memories.
