Makes me wonder if he can read people’s hearts/ souls as well as know their names. If so either he can 1. sense they are about to do the right thing or 2. He is testing them to see if they have good intentions or 3. messing with them before he does harm.
I’m thinking along the lines of #2. Either he knows their intentions and is asking to see how honest they are or he wants to see their answer first before deciding what to do next.
There’s also the chance the Stonebreaker knows that either his fate or his potential freedom relies on these humans. If that is true, he might be more open to cooperating than fighting.
There’s also the chance that #4 the Stonebreaker demon never was evil or intended to do harm but the real story (not told) was that Tenid (or whoever was the first man to establish a human town) either provoked the Stonebreaker, did harm or abused the demons, thus causing the war in the first place.
Anya appears to be remembering the Stonebreaker’s tale and surprised that the Stonebreaker tale she is seeing in the current moment (black ink) is not matching her memory (blue ink) “You’re supposed to yell and roar.” and he appears to be correcting her by calling out her name asking the same question “What do you seek.”
And then saying “You’re not looking for a stone.” It also suggests the Stonebreaker can read memories of people and can tell their intentions.
Hmm, he knows their names and it doesn’t seem to be an issue. Interesting.
At least not yet.

This page here suggests that theory of #4:

Yup, I’ve been suspicious of the ‘Stonebreaker’ story since that “memory/flashback/scene” as well.
I don’t think that sword is gonna do much, honey.
Nope but she’ll probably try to use it anyway.
